Who speaks for the Self-Directed investor?

Recently I read an article by a financial advisor with “25 years of experience in dealing with individual investors.”

He sees his role as a coach helping” investors ignore Wall and Bay Street hype and hysteria ….” As he sees it, only investment advisors can protect investors from themselves.  He sees these ignorant self-directed investors as, “piling into the market after superior stock returns and before inferior returns,” “ignoring tax ramifications” and foolishly “investing for entertainment.”

When you give access to your money to an advisor you are immediately creating the potential for that advisor to use your money in their self-interest: not yours.   While this advisor does address investment advisor fees, “The financial regulators require us to disclose them.” He does not touch upon the seemingly daily reporting of investment advisor thefts of client money nor all the “legal” but murky ways that investment advisors can siphon of your money.

(The “full-service fee schedule” account you signed probably allows all the following fees to be charged against your investment account: operating fees such as custody fees, interest charges on debit balances, fees for manages and fee-based programs, transaction fees, foreign transaction tax, issuer commissions, service fees, fee for managing funds, deferred sales charge, referral fee, etc). Self-directed investors are shielded from almost all of these fees.

On rare occasions investment advisors get charged with theft:

The Halton Regional Police Service – Fraud Unit has arrested a Burlington man in relation to a fraud investigation.

The accused was an investment industry professional who worked for a financial company that was registered with the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC).  Between 2011 and 2016, two victims invested a total of approximately $1.6 million with the accused to purchase insurance and other investments. The accused diverted the funds he received from the victims to his own bank accounts.”

Those vice presidents’ allegiance is to the bank, not you! The case for DIY investing

The most productive new business salesman I ever employed is now a “Vice President” with the investment division of one of Canada’s largest banks. His special skill was in belittling prospects who did not see the benefit of his sales pitch.

Frequently, I got told by his new sales that they would buy but they never wanted to see him again. Not understanding the role of investment advisors employed by a bank, I was surprised when I learned that this strong “closer” could have risen to the “executive” ranks.

With a better understanding of bank investment advisors, I now understand why he has been successful. I learned that the title of Vice President is often given to financial advisors who are great closers. It impresses the naïve. The illusion of trust and knowledge is further enhanced with several impressive designations on their business cards.

Much to my surprise, I learned that investment advisors are hired off the street the same as any sales representative is hired. If they can show they are successful closers, they are well along the way to being hired. With little internal training, they are then set loose on a public full of meek sheep who know even less about investing than this newly hired investment “expert.”

Banks already know if you’re a prime prospect

It is almost impossible to function in our society without being a bank customer. The bank does not have to guess at your net worth and whether you are a prime prospect for their full-service investment advisors. They know.

You will be contacted by phone or during a visit to your bank branch with a seductive pitch that goes like this, “Surely you would appreciate some free advice on how best to manage that great sum of money you have on deposit. It is earning next to nothing. Don’t you want to be rich? Let us make your money work for you. Our fees are so small you won’t even notice them. When can we set up an appointment for you with our vice president? Here is his very impressive business card.” Continue Reading…

Advice is Often Helpful; Stock Picking Less So

One thing that I notice both in the media and in speaking with other advisors is the dual presumption that passive investment products are made for Do-It-Yourself (DIY) investors and that active ones are made for people who work with advisors.

To hear some people tell it, it’s as if those who are using mutual funds have to have an advisor and those using ETFs are always DIYers.

In fact, there are two separate decisions at play here. The two mutually exclusive decisions are:

  1. Should I use an advisor or be a DIY investor?

  2. Should I use stocks, actively managed mutual funds or passive products like ETFs or index funds?
